FAST GLASS CORVETTES CLUB HISTORY

The idea of a corvette club started in the fall & winter of 1995. Jim Massey (the original founder of Fast Glass Corvettes) and his daughter Erin started handing out fliers & placed newspaper ads throughout the area. Chris Caldwell started helping in the effort as well as Rob Hester. No official meeting place had been established at this time.

The first meeting was held at the old Mercantile bank (the round bank) on Caraway Road in the early spring of 1996.  Members in attendance were Jim Massey, Chris Caldwell, George Stem, Rob Hester and Ernie Pearcy. The first name for the club was the Corvette Cub of Northeast Arkansas. The club started with three C-3s and two C-4s. The club entered their first Jonesboro Auto Show at the ASU Convocation Center with two cars and later that same year went to the Eureka Springs All Corvette Show with three cars.

The Corvette Club of Northeast Arkansas started having a few meetings at the Milky Way on Gee Street in the fall of 1996. Serge Lefebvre joined in the fall of 1996 and Shannon Davis and Ernie Simpson came along in the spring of 1997. The club moved to the Front Page Café, our first official meeting place with Jimmy Martin, Jamie Jarvis, Jay & LaDonna Gilbert, and Don Jones joining in 1998. LaDonna Gilbert was our first unofficial officer as club secretary, keeping up with meeting places and the $5.00 per month fee each member paid for things like postage and any other miscellaneous items the club needed.

The club elected its first official officers in 1998 with Delmas Fry as President and Ernie Simpson as Vice-President. The club retained the same 7 to 10 members keeping the club going  by meeting at places like Corky’s, Ryan’s, Western Sizzlin, Front Page Café (out by the bypass), and Dixie Café.  There were even meetings at several members homes until the club grew too large to hold meetings at a private home in 2003.

Serge Lefebvre became the club’s second President and Joyce Davis became Secretary/Treasurer in 1999. Joyce remained Secretary until December of 2007, and remained Treasurer until January 2009.

Marty McBride took over the position of Secretary in January of 2008.  Melissa Elliott became Treasurer of the club on January 2009.  Shannon Davis became the club’s second Vice President in 2002 and retired in April 2009.  Jim Massey was elected as the clubs third Vice-President in May 2009.  Jim resigned in October 2009.  Rick Elliott became the 4th Vice-President in October 2009.

From 2000 until now, the club has really grown. The club name was changed to Fast Glass Corvettes and Mike Taylor joined with the first C-5 in August 2002. Hank Walters joined in 2005 with the club’s first C-6.  Fat City Grill is now the official meeting place for the club, meeting the first Tuesday of each month.

The club lost one of its long time members, Ernie Simpson, who passed away in the spring of 2006. The club honored his memory with a special brick with his name inscribed on it, in his honor, which is now part of the walkway leading into the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY.

We hope to continue to “grow” the club and we invite you to “grow” with us.
